Truck Trailer Backup accidents
Back up accidents occur frequently due the size of the vehicle and limited vision view when your trailer is not straight with your tractor. Even if you see, what you see on the mirror might be closer than it looks. When backing truck trailer, you vision is restricted to your direct view and your mirrors view. Due to the angle of the trailer and other barriers exist; you might not see the whole picture to backup safely. The best way to backup safely is, if you don’t see, don’t move. There is term used in the trucking industry "GOAL" or Go Out And Look. Basically what is says is, do not backup if you not 100% sure that you will not hit something.

Safe backup methods

  • GOAL - Remember this term. Go Out And Look. Do not assume it’s still safe to move on.
  • Backup from safe side - If straight back is possible, always backup straight. If not your second best choice is backingup from the driver side. Use direct visiion and mirrors and GOAL for this backup method. Do not backup from the blind side unless you have to. If you have to, come down and look every few inchs.
  • Use a guide -If someone available to assist you, ask to guide you specially when the backup is tight. Also you can use an object as a guide but it must be in you direct vision.
  • Move slowly -Take your time when backingup and check both mirrors continusly.
